Soft shoulders

Ten-year-old Bridget...
...lives with her mom in a small community on the backside of Whiteface Mountain. Bridget is tired of having to wear snowpants, and tired of being picked on by two neighborhood boys. One snowy day, she sets out in the woods with her friends on a grand plan to outsmart the boys. But Bridget and one of her friends are caught in a snowstorm, and amidst the swirling snow, believe they have encountered the scary creature from the bog they learned about in school as they face the dark night in the forest. Ideas for the classroom
Soft Shoulders has been adapted by several schools as part of their curriculum, since the adventure includes information about the geography and science (plants, animals and bogs) of the Adirondacks. The book also holds knowledge about different kinds of families, friendship, and courage.
Honors
This book won first prize in a national competition for a children's book set in the Adirondack Mountains sponsored by The Writer's Voice of Silver Bay. Author Katherine Paterson was the judge.
