Dead End
As she sets out on an overnight trip...
...in the Adirondacks, Bridget's mind is muddled with worries about middle school and a secret she is keeping. Reaching the top of the mountain is exhilarating, but even more so is the fire tower they bravely climb at the peak of the mountain! When her backpack falls from the tower, Bridget's secret is discovered and she has to face herself, and make some realizations about friendship. Then she joins her friends Anna and Gracey for their plan to outwit the boys on the trip by making them believe there is a moose on the mountain. On a trail just off the top of the mountain, nothing can prepare them for what they are about to see. It's a fright that has them up all night, wondering about real dead ends.
Ideas for the classroom
Dead End can be used in the classroom to discuss mountains in the Adirondacks, particularly the 14 that are left with fire towers on top, like the one in this book, Mt. Arab. There is also information about moose, which have made a strong return in the northeast. Other topics include friendship,mother-daughter relationships, and struggling with school studies.
